The World’s Best Obstacle Races
Obstacles races have become a massive barnburner around the world and here in South Africa. Although our obstacle races are certainly progressing, there are a good mix of tough, fun and completely insane obstacle races that we would love to see hit the South African scene.
Here are the wildest, most epic, most popular, and most well-conceived obstacle races from around the world…
This is a crazy obstacle race which travels around the USA. This event is unlike any other and combines a 5km course with game show inspired obstacles for the craziest race ever, followed by a ridiculous after party. It’s not aimed at the tough crowd, but those seeking an absolute blast!
This is only taking place on February 5, 2014, but their tagline says “If you agree with this statement: ‘If I get lost, hurt or die, it is my OWN damn fault,’ then you are eligible to register for a Survival Run.” That says a hell of a lot! It’s about a 75km or maybe longer, obstacle race and you will not be scaling walls or doing burpees, but you may be doing things you have never done before, like ascending/descending volcanoes.
This is one of the leading obstacle race series which travels the world. It’s an event of pure primitive craziness. It features the Spartan Sprint (3 miles and 15+ obstacles), the Super Spartan (8 miles and 20+ obstacles), the Spartan Beast (12 miles and 25+ obstacles), and then the Military Series or “Death Race”. The Death Race features mud runs, obstacle racing, trail racing, physical challenges and mental challenges all in a +48 hour adventure race. They mention “Please only consider this adventure style race if you have lived a full life to date.” Heavy!
The Tough Mudder events happen in the USA and the UK and are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed with the help of the British Special Forces. Their aim is to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and especially your camaraderie. The obstacles are incredibly innovative and difficult, and incorporate mentally-challenging aspects that set it apart – there are even obstacles that give you an electric shock!
This obstacle race series see its roots travelling between the USA, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. You compete, based on divisions, which are categorised by age groups. This 5km race challenges you with a series of gruelling obstacles over tough terrain and then you get to celebrate with music, beer, and muddy shorts. The Iron Warrior Dash is their tougher 15-20 mile race for those looking for the much tougher option.
“No mud. Mo Miles. No Mercy”. Also based in the USA, the Alpha Warrior is a technical obstacle course designed to challenge and developed to destroy. You’ll hang from obstacles 30 feet in the air, bounce from platform to platform on trampolines, and it’s guaranteed to keep your adrenaline pumping. Clean, fun and incredible challenging!
