How to Defeat Your Ego

During the course of your life, you are more than likely to suffer a series of setbacks that could have been avoided if you did not allow your ego to get the better of you. The ego is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something that can also be very detrimental. If it is not kept in check, it could hinder your progress in any facet.  It will define your experiences in life. In order to know how to defeat your ego, consider the following:

Don’t Get Upset Easily

People can only upset you if you give them permission. It is sometimes easier said than done, but you need to learn to take it on the chin. Look hard enough for reasons to be offended or upset and you can find them in surplus but that does not do you any favours. Rather conserve that energy for something else. Being less sensitive gives you better judgement.

Embrace Criticism

Sometimes we take criticism as a personal attack. Criticism can often be beneficial. If criticism is constructive, it can be potentially beneficial as it can show you where you need to improve. However, the operative word is “constructive”. Be smart enough to distinguish between criticism that is constructive and unnecessary.

Be Open Minded

Be more open minded to the ideas and notions of others. Acknowledge the fact that there is sometimes more than one solution to a problem. Be willing to learn from others and you will be surprised about how this can actually empower you. Do not rule out the fact that you can potentially learn from somebody who is younger or even less experienced.

Do Not Be Afraid of Failure

There is a major difference between a healthy drive for success and ruthless competitiveness. While it is important to strive for success, do not fear failure. Even in the bleakest of circumstances there is some good to be taken in. If you fail at something it is not the end of the world. Dust yourself off and try again. More importantly, learn from your mistakes and don’t make the same mistake twice.

Let Go of the Need to Always Be Right

The need to always be right can cause problems for you in the working world and even in your personal life. As nobody is perfect, it is impossible to always be right. When you have to always be right, it will hinder your potential and can cause you to miss opportunity.

Try to Be More Spiritual

Read your holy book more often and pray regularly. Maintaining a spiritual relation with god helps you to see things more clearly. Even if you do not believe in God, understand the spiritual side of a practice that encourages the perfection of the character (e.g. martial arts).

Show Kindness and Compassion

Make the effort to be kind to others. It is also important to be compassionate to the plight of others. While we all have our own daily challenges, when you can help somebody, do so. It will help you better yourself as a person and having a more caring attitude is likely to keep your head planted firmly on your shoulders.

Conclusion

The ego is not completely a bad thing as it can be a motivating force, but be weary to not let it be the main source of making your decisions. Try to implement the points that we covered and your ego will not get the better of you.

How often does your ego get the better of you? How do you keep your ego in check?
