Becoming a Supple Leopard Review

Starrett’s thought process is that we all can perform basic maintenance on our bodies, to alleviate pain and stiffness. He is a big advocate of not running to medical specialists all the time to sort out minor issues that we are more than capable of dealing with ourselves.

Becoming a Supple Leopard (by Dr Kelly Starrett with Glen Cordoza) pieces together many of his teachings found on mobilitywod.com into an easy to read resource. It is a step-by-step guide on how we can fix the habitual positions we find ourselves in during the modern work week.

Each chapter addresses a specific theme, with the following chapter building on what was covered previously. The book is supplemented by great colour photographs that allow you too visualize the lessons and make the application to your own mobility regime seamless.

The entire book is written is plain English with Starrett breaking down body positions and body parts into a language that we all can understand. You do not need a vast knowledge of the human anatomy to get to grips with the concepts presented in the book.

Simply put, there are no excuses for us to live with the aches and pains that plague us day to day.

For those of you who have experience with mobilitywod.com, you may be tempted to rush to the back of this book and immediately engage in the exercises to fix those areas on your body which require instant attention. I would ask you to exercise patience at this point. By only going through the mobility exercises, you are only making an impact on the symptom of your movement dysfunction and not the cause.

Starrett’s explanation on the “bracing sequence” will make you stop and think about how you move during your whole day and not just when you begin your training sessions. Conscious attention will need to be applied so that you can integrate the concepts in the book to your daily life.
